I hadn’t heard of MrBallen before and the description of this graphic novel was somewhat vague, so I went into it without any preconcieved ideas. If you are the same then let me explain what I’ve learned:
MrBallen is a social media “storyteller” who regales his audience with creepy and mysterious tales that are all true (or rather, true in the sense that there is proof that someone once claimed it happened, but the question of how to prove something is more for a philosophical essay in Theory of Knowledge class, not a book review). The Terror Within collects nine of such tales (although four of them were omitted from the advance copy I’ve received).
The only tale I had heard of before was the very first one, but I did not know quite so many details as the comic included. I liked how the colours were used in this one, and the style of the artwork in general. The first story is a fully true unsolved mystery, others are based, as mentioned earlier, on just the word of someone, and another one, which I found fascinating, started as the usual supernatural myth and then went on to explain how it all came to be.
