“Infection Points” by Elena Pavlova

3.5 Stars

I’m quite glad I gave this little novella a shot. I know 3.5 Stars is not that high of a rating, but most of that is due to the fact that I wanted more. The idea of a new take on modern vampires in which they are an endangered predator that is studied by scientists and protected by conservation groups works really well.

Where this book struggles is with its brevity. The wonderful world-building gets cut short, relationships between characters and organisations are not explored enough, and the amount of characters for such a short story is a little overwhelming. Occasionally, some scenes are a bit confusing, and I was wondering if something got a little lost in the translation.

Infection Points is well worth reading despite these shortcomings and I found myself racing through the story to find out what happens next. The ending is a bit abrupt, but maybe we could have a sequel in the future. I’d love to explore the world that Pavlova has built a bit more.
