“An Hour Before Dark” by Larry Hinkle

I’m so glad I gave this book a chance, as I’m usually a bit weary about short story collections, but I think the fact that all these stories are strongly linked together, it doesn’t feel as “hit and miss” as anthologies often do.
I love the setting and worldbuilding in “An Hour Before Dark”, and am now very tempted to check out “The Eris Ridge Trail” to find out more about some of the characters, creatures, and locations we meet in the short story collection.
The author does overdo it a bit with the Stephen King references though. What should be a nice little surprise you find was more like constantly stumbling over hints, references and name-droppings. Or maybe I just read too much Stephen King and the average reader would miss some of the vaguer easter eggs.
