“Cross My Heart, I Hope You Die” By Mallory Arnold

4 Stars

A fast paced, thrilling read. I think the publisher missed a trick by planning to publish in july, as the snowy mountain setting fits perfectly into the winter season (and I got the read it just a week after we had some february snow, thanks to Netgalley).
At times, the three protagonists, between whose points of view we switch, seem painfully stupid about their actions, and a lot of the plot twists are predictable from a mile away, but then is that bad writing or is it actually good writing for a slasher? After all, Nora explained in the very first chapter, that the characters in slasher films do the wrong things and ignore warning signs, which is how they end up getting killed, and that the predictability makes for the endearing quality of slashers. While I see her point when it comes to comfort watching, I do love a well executed plot twist that you can only see coming on repeat viewing. Thankfully, there is enough mystery in this novel that I could not predict how it would play out.
So if you like female driven slashers with a revenge plot, this book is just right for you.
