“Scratch Moss” by David Barnett

I was very lucky to get an ARC of this book through netgalley, as otherwise it probably would have passed me by and I never would have known what I had been missing.
The beginning is full of dark tension and almost like going down a mineshaft yourself, the structure of the story leads you deeper and deeper into its past until you get the full picture of what is going on. And once you’ve reached the deepest point, you follow the protagonists of each time period as they make their own attempts of climbing back out of the horror they find themselves in.

I had not come across this author before, so was delighted to find out through the afterword that he has 2 previous books within the folk horror subgenre and another one planned, and I will definitely keep my eyes peeled for them.
