While it is an intruiging premise and the worldbuilding would lend itself to many interesting stories, Light & Earth & Marrow is ultimately too short for its own good. The Bell family is very two-dimentional. The story obviously needs them to disregard all the advice and warnings they’ve been given, but there does not seem to be any logical reason for them to do so other than “I don’t want to”.
The Villagers could have played a bigger role and the Others been explored more. The history with Tilly’s wife also came short and as a result of that felt a bit unnecessary.
I liked what was there, but ultimately felt there was not enough for me to fully enjoy this novella.
