Just one more horror movie night before teenage friends Billie and Tom will have to say goodbye as college leads them to separate paths in life. Maybe Billie’s crush will be there, too, if he’s lucky. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to them, an alien invasion is taking place. Some alien parasites have even taken over people much closer to them than they suspect.
I believe Cesare must be a big horror movie fan. He writes about them with as much love as he does video games in Zero Lives Remaining. I was especially delighted to find some 80s horror films mentioned that I have not come across yet (In my defense, he has a headstart. I wasn’t even alive yet during the 80s). Also some nice parasitoid alien invasion foreshadowing in those films.
Told from multiple POVs we get a chance to see the alien invasion grow and encroach on our teen protagonists, while they still think their biggest problems are bullies, girls, and friendship troubles. Cesare again makes really intruiging annoying characters, whether that’s the bully or the troubled best friend, although for some reason I kept imagining the teenagers as much younger than they are meant to be.
Full of tension and with wonderfully descriptive gore, Video Night certainly scratches the itch for some 80s nostalgia horror.
